Residential Treatment

Stepworks offers licensed 30-day residential care in the historic Helm Mansion.  We have 16 beds total with approximately half available for male clients and half for female clients. Detoxification is available through our medical director, Thomas Ingram, MD, for those patients requiring this level of care.

Residential treatment involves a mixture of individual, group, and family therapy. Daily chores are also a part of treatment as patients learn to take responsibility for themselves and accountability to their peers. We use a lifestyle curriculum developed by Hazelden. This curriculum includes traditional 12-step approaches combined with practical group therapy. Attendance at onsite 12-step meetings is mandatory. In fact, attendance at all treatment sessions is mandatory.

The length of stay for residential treatment is targeted at 30 days. Occassionally, insurance and financial considerations shorten this slightly. Occassionally, an individual's progress will require stays longer than 30 days. Obviously, there is nothing magic about "30 days." Our experience has been, however, that you cannot rush through treatment nor can you hide from the real world. Thirty days seems to be the ideal time frame for residential treatment.

Why do I need residential treatment and not outpatient?  Treatment is hard. It requires 100% effort and concentration. It always requires daily/hourly support and often requires removal from the settings where drug use occurred. You are appropriate for residential treatment if:

    • You continue to use alcohol/drugs despite suffering significant financial, family, legal and work consequences
    • You have medical or psychiatric problems
    • Your spouse or other family members are currently using
    • Your home situation is stressful and chaotic
    • You live alone, lost your job or have no transportation
    • You have tried outpatient and failed
    • You cannot stay clean and sober without constant support
    • You cannot afford another relapse
